Most of us know that blueberries are “good for us,” but we don’t know the exact reasons why. Here are 8 reasons to make blueberries your new best friend!

1. Blueberries contain catechins, these activate fat burning cells and assist with weight loss (particularly in the stubborn belly area). Regularly ingesting catechins can increase abdominal fat loss by up to 77%. It can also double your total weight loss. Yes please!

2. Blueberries offer a rich source of proanthocyanidins. These decrease free radical levels that are linked to aging (aka wrinkling) and disease. I’m in for anything that will save me money on wrinkle creams.

3. Researchers have found that blueberries may reverse age-related memory loss & motor skill decline.

4. Blueberries are packed with these vitamins:

Vitamin E – good for healthy skin, eyes, & heart

Vitamin C – promotes healthy immune system & helps collagen formation (the natural way to get Kylie Jenner looking lips)

Niacin – promotes healthy cholesterol levels & helps turn fat into energy

Riboflavin – increases energy, strengthens immune & digestive systems, slows aging, helps regulate thyroid activity, & promotes growth of red blood cells

Folate – good for the heart, supports fetal development in pregnant women, reduces depression, slows down aging in the brain, & promotes colon health blueberry-539134_640

5. Blueberries contain salicylic acid, the natural version of aspirin. Salicylic acid is known to thin the blood and reduce pain.

6.  Blueberries increase the production of dopamine. Dopamine is a natural neurotransmitter (aka a brain messenger) that makes you feel good. It also tends to be low in people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

7. Blueberries are a rich source of phytonutrients ellagic acid. Ellagic acid helps the body seek out and destroy harmful and damaged cells, such as cancer cells.

8. At only 80 calories per cup, blueberries are low in fat, and loaded with fiber. This keeps you full longer. They are also a great source of manganese, which helps convert carbs and fats into energy. Hello bikini season…

336455450_origVeruca Salt may have given us the impression that turning into a blubbery is a “bad thing”, but if it means we can help prevent cancer, lose weight more easily, feel happier, and look younger… we should all wish to be blueberries! I suggest adding a daily cup of blueberries to your cereal, yogurt, or even just grabbing a handful. However you choose to eat them, know that you’re doing your body a huge favor.
