8 Fun & Easy Baby Shower Planning Tips

DSC_0011

You’re that fabulous friend who has graciously offered to host a baby shower in your home. Honoring a new life is one of the most meaningful occasions we can celebrate. However, planning the actual soiree can be exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. Don’t worry… These easy tips will help you keep your sanity and also guarantee that your party goes off flawlessly!

1. INVITATIONS: There is something so magical about receiving an invitation in the mail. In the day and age of evites, texting and junk mail… It’s rather refreshing to receive a pretty little envelope wedged in-between Bloomie’s ads and the bills in your mailbox. I recommend splurging and making each of your guests feel special by sending out invitations rather than emails.

Invitations can be handmade, bought in store, or purchased online. I’m a huge fan of Etsy, Costco, and Tinyprints if you want to order online. If you prefer to touch card stock before purchasing, you can also find gorgeous invitations at Paper Source, Papyrus & Target.

2. GUEST LIST: Coed baby showers are all the rage in Los Angeles right now. I’m personally a huge fan because weekends are meant to be shared with close friends and family, and that’s exactly who should be on the guest list for a baby shower. It also gives Dad a chance to get excited about his little bundle on the way. If you prefer to keep your party old fashioned and leave all the diaper guessing games to the ladies then that’s great too.

HINT: Keeping the shower intimate and appropriately sized for the home is also a huge bonus. Nobody wants their guests hanging in the master bathroom because the living room is too small for their uncomfortably, oversized party.

3. FOOD: It is common courtesy to serve food when hosting a party. You don’t need to break your piggy bank to cater a served sit-down meal, or even stress yourself out arranging a huge spread… but have some manners and cover the basics. Sandwiches, a salad, a cheese platter, veggie platter, and fruit options can go a long way. I also recommend cookies and/or cake of some sort. Nothing says “celebration” like dessert!

HINT: Depending on how fancy your entourage is, paper plates and plastic utensils can be a great way to keep clean-up simple. These items come in colorful options and some plates even look like real China (until you pick them up of course). Just an idea if you’re trying to keep things easy.

4. BAR: Let’s be honest… Most people like to drink. So unless the soon-to-be Mom & Dad are offended by champagne, wine, and beer; have it on hand. Watching the Mom-to-be open multiple baby gifts can get rather painful after a while. Please do the civilized thing and offer a bar of some sort. ESPECIALLY if men are invited to this baby shower, they are troopers for being there and the least you can do is offer them a cold beer.

HINT: Also keep plenty of bottled waters, juice and sodas on hand for your non-boozy & underage guests.

5. DECOR: My advice is to keep it simple. Flowers, decorative plates, pretty napkins, and balloons. There is something to be said for “less is more”.

HINT: When we threw a baby shower for our friends expecting a girl I suggested that everyone wear pink. This wasn’t required (obviously) but it made our photos absolutely adorable. I worded it on the invitation in such a way that it sounded fun (hopefully) and not too bossy.

HINT: I also purchased onesies and fabric markers at Target for the guests to draw on. This is a fun way for everyone to show off their creative skills after a couple mimosas. Once the onesies were done we hung them up on a clothes line and they served as a cute decoration before the parents took them home for baby to use.

6. GAMES: I have mixed feelings on games. I’ve never been a fan of smelling chocolate in diapers. It seems barbaric and it’s downright gross if you ask me. However, playing a couple games that allow your guests to win prizes is usually a hit. Everyone likes winning!

Guessing the distance around the Mother’s waist with a ribbon is easy, Baby shower Bingo is a classic, and guessing which baby food is which can be funny to watch (especially if men are participating).

HINT: Candles, bath soaps, nail polish & bottles of wine are all fun ideas for prizes.

7. REGISTRY INFO: This is a tricky one. According to etiquette you are NOT supposed to write the registered stores on an invitation. The “proper” way to keep it from looking like a “gimmie fest” is to have the host(s) answer the registry store inquiries when guests ask. I personally won’t decline an invite that included registry info (I find it easier to be honest), but old fashioned etiquette frowns upon our modern ways of thinking. Just do what you feel is right for your audience, if it’s a stuffy older crowd you may want to avoid placing this information on your invites.

8. FAVORS: These are unnecessary, but always a bonus. If you have the time & budget to set up a candy buffet, bake cookies, or buy candles for each guest… it’s a great way to send everyone off. But this should be the last item on your to-do list. After you’ve wined and dined these people they will hopefully leave happy regardless.

HINT: If you have a nice camera & time to take photos through-out the shower you can later create a photo book for the new family. I personally like to use Costco or Shutterfly for these projects because they’re very user friendly and I’m not a “techy” person. Photo books are always a great gift and the parents really appreciate all the thought you put into making them.

Congratulations… you are READY! I hope your shower turns out beautifully, all of your guests have fun, and you create memories that will always put a smile on the new Mother’s face.
