The Paleo diet is currently gaining popularity, and being a fan of it my friends often ask me what exactly Paleo means. In short, it’s a lifestyle choice that includes any foods a caveman would have been able to hunt, gather, catch and eat. It helps people lose weight, feel more energetic, and it also helped my skin look incredible when I was following it religiously. It’s a bit challenging to do while dining out or on vacation, it costs a little more for the ingredients, and involves a little more preparation than most meals. However, choosing Paleo meals more often than not will definitely help you look and feel more healthy. 

Paleo Allows: Fruits, veggies, (grass fed) meats, fish, eggs, seeds, healthy oils (olive oil, walnut oil, flaxseed oil, coconut oil, avocado oil) and nuts. Minimal amounts of wine and tequila are allowed on occasion, but not recommended. 

Doesn’t Allow: wheat, cereal grains, legumes (beans), potatoes (except sweet potatoes ARE allowed), refined sugar, processed foods, and refined vegetable oils.

Sadly you are not allowed most vodkas on this diet because they are derived from wheat, rice, soybeans or potatoes. If you must have your vodka fix while doing the Paleo diet, choose a vodka that is made from grapes. Drinking is not encouraged on the Paleo diet, but a vodka soda is a better option than drinking a wheat based beer. 

Thoughts on Dairy: Some Paleo followers eat dairy, others do not. If you can’t let go of cheese and milk (I LOVE cheese and can’t live without it) then choose products that are full in fat. Products that are low-fat and fat-free use fillers that Paleo eaters believe our bodies don’t properly know how to break down. 

Paleo Pancake Recipe

3 ripe organic bananas

6 organic eggs

1/3 coconut flour

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon coconut oil (for frying)

Mix all ingredients in a bowl or Kitchen Aid mixer until batter is smooth. Heat coconut oil in the skillet and pour 1/4 cup of batter into pan. Fry until both sides are golden (about 2 min on each side). Cover in fresh fruit or pure maple syrup (this is Paleo friendly) and breakfast is served!

    I pretty much follow Paleo by necessity (not choice 😉 since I’m gluten intolerant and while nursing baby is allergic to dairy and legumes. Soooo this recipe is right up my alley and looks delicious! Can’t wait to try it. Love your blog!
