5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Let Your Friends Borrow Your Favorite Dress…

IMG_5661Some women are addicted to buying jewelry, and others love shoes. Don’t get me wrong, I love sparkly things too, but my true love is dresses. Cute floral sundresses, glamorous evening gowns, soft maxi dresses, sequins cocktail numbers… I adore them all equally. My husband often teases me that I could open a boutique with all the dresses I’ve purchased. I just can’t help myself.

This being said, my girlfriends and sisters often approach me when they have an upcoming event that requires a special occasion dress. I don’t mind sharing, I love playing stylist and helping other women feel pretty. However, I’ve learned through trial and error that not everyone can be trusted with you favorite dresses. Here are some good reasons NOT to lend your favorite dresses to a friend.

  1. They don’t take care of their own apparel. Some people have bad luck, they spill ketchup and red wine on themselves like it’s their job. This is fine with me; I will even give you a Shout wipe from my purse. I just prefer that you aren’t wearing my favorite silk dress while eating like a toddler.
  1. The last time you borrowed a dress you returned it without dry cleaning. SERIOUSLY? If somebody is nice enough to lend you an article of his or her clothing you should return it in the same condition (if not nicer) than when you borrowed it. I don’t want to put on my own dress and smell your perfume, see your deodorant marks, or spills of champagne. Lord only knows what you did in it if you wore it on a date, I’ve heard of “Tinder”! Whether the dress cost $50 or $500… The classy thing to do is dry clean the item before returning it to it’s rightful owner.
  1. You hoard other people’s articles of clothing. If I’ve lent you a piece in the past and you took 6 months to 6 years to return it, then I am less likely to offer up another one of my favorite dresses. Please return your friend’s clothing in a timely manner, unless your lender is pregnant & can’t fit into their Herve Leger for four more months… or they state otherwise.
  1. If you are curvy like Kim Kardashian, and the person whose dress you want to borrow is built like Nicole Richie. I mean this in the nicest way possible… just because you can squeeze yourself into a friend’s dress doesn’t mean you should wear it. If you return the dress completely stretched out then it will no longer flatter the original owner…AND… it’s bad manners to put your dress lender in the position of asking them to borrow their doll sized dress.
  1. You’ve borrowed an item in the past that still had the price tags attached, and returned the item with stains, missing beads, torn, etc. You get the picture. This is unacceptable behavior. Perhaps it was the lenders own fault for handing out a brand new dress, but it’s completely devastating regardless. This person needs a serious hiatus from your closet.

If you can manage to be extra careful with your friend’s dresses, dry clean them after use, return them in a timely manner, borrow from a friend with a similar body type, and make sure you don’t hand it back in ruins… You’re the perfect nominee to borrow your friends (or maybe even my) favorite dresses
