If You Don’t Have Anything Nice To Say…

IMG_4064Sometimes It’s Better To Bite Your Tongue…

I was recently asked to bake cupcakes for a friend’s birthday party. I always find this request quite flattering, clearly my baking must not be atrocious since people repeatedly ask me to bring a home baked desserts to their soirees.

That being said, I feel there is always at least one “friend” who likes to offer their unsolicited advice on how I can improve my recipe. I’m all about taking constructive criticism when it is asked for… But there is a time and a place for this sort of conversation. Shouting out what ingredients I should use to better my cupcakes while everyone else is busy eating them is not the appropriate place for this Gordon Ramsey type talk.

Here’s the thing:

1. If I asked for everyone’s thoughts then this commentary would be fine.

2. If I were looking to open a bakery it would be somewhat more acceptable.

3. If I was politely pulled to the side to have this conversation one on one… it would have been slightly less embarrassing.

Point is: I was the one asked to bake the dessert. While this person had good intentions, they were not the one commissioned to bake for the group.IMG_1091

Typically children are taught this phrase, yet adults seem to need a reminder here and there as well,

“If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
