How To Drink Like A Lady & Avoid A Hangover…

image1Spring is here, evenings are wonderfully warm, and cocktails are officially in season. If you’re like me you have a fabulous time while indulging in said cocktails, then suffer from a massive headache the following day. There is nothing classy about not remembering what you said (or did) the night before, finding social media photos of yourself drunkenly dancing on tabletops, or waking up in a wrinkled cocktail dress you wore the night prior.

Don’t worry, you can still enjoy social drinking and prevent the painful aftermath. Here are 5 tips that will help you drink like a lady and avoid a nasty hangover… 

1. Eat a decent sized meal before a night of drinking. Pastas and pizza are best for preventing hangovers because the carbohydrates slow down your body’s absorption of alcohol. If you are prepping for bikini season and avoiding bread, you can opt for an oily fish like salmon or trout. The fatty acids found in these types of fish will also limit your body’s absorption of alcohol. 

water-686917_12802. Drink water in-between each cocktail or glass of wine. Water is a diuretic which will cause you to urinate more, and cause dehydration. Dehydration leads to hangover symptoms such as headaches and dizziness, so drinking more water with your alcohol will help the way you feel the next day.  

3. Place a bottled water, Advil (or ibuprofen), and a daily vitamin on your nightstand before you start drinking. This is a convenient way to remind yourself to drink water and take pain medication before going to bed. The daily vitamin will help restore any nutrients your body may be lacking after your evening of fun, the body uses a lot of vitamins while metabolizing alcohol (especially vitamin B). IMG_3479

4. Try not to consume more than one drink per hour. Your body takes about 60 -75 minutes to digest one drink. The more quickly you drink, the faster your blood alcohol level rises (and the more quickly your good judgement gets clouded).

5. Stick with one type of alcohol. Mixing drinks will inevitably cause a horrible hangover. Each alcohol contains various additives and flavorings, when these are combined your body has a difficult time processing them all at once. I also recommend avoiding overly sweet drinks. Besides being incredibly high in empty calories, the sugar content in drinks like lemon drops, apple martinis and cosmopolitans can mask the alcohol’s flavors, which causes you to crave more cocktails than you would if drinking wine or a vodka soda. 

In short… Drink responsibly and make sure to hydrate with H2O throughout the evening.


NOTE: I do not recommend using Tylenol as your pain relief pill while (or after) drinking. Tylenol has acetaminophen in it, which can cause damage to your liver when combined with alcohol.
